Beware of Theft on Buses: A Real Story and Tips for Safe Travel

Traveling by bus through Peru and Bolivia is a common experience for both tourists and locals. However, there is a recurring issue that few people warn about: theft inside bus terminals and buses. As a resident of Puno, I have heard many stories of travelers losing their belongings on these journeys, and unfortunately, I personally experienced a distressing situation on a return trip from Lima to Puno.

A Nighttime Journey That Could Have Ended in Theft

After an exhausting trip from Puno to Lima to buy a professional camera, I decided to return that same night. I boarded a well-known bus company with my partner, and shortly after getting on, I noticed something strange: the driver was arguing with a passenger as if he already knew him. Eventually, the driver expelled him from the bus, which led to some complaints from other passengers. At the time, I didn’t think much of it since I was too tired.

My partner suggested that I store my backpack in the overhead compartment for a more comfortable ride, but something made me hesitate. Inside was my precious camera, so I decided to keep it on my lap and only put my clothes in the backpack. As the night progressed, exhaustion took over, and I covered myself with a blanket.

Suddenly, I woke up slightly and saw something unsettling: the passenger who had been expelled had returned and was now sitting right in front of me. Then, I noticed him communicating with another passenger to my right using hand signals. I remembered that both had spoken when they first boarded, which made me suspicious. I tried to go back to sleep, but a sense of alertness kept me uneasy.

At one point, I discreetly opened my eyes and saw the man in front of me taking my backpack and rummaging through it. Shortly after, as if nothing had happened, he placed it back where I had left it. Fear rushed through my body. Observing more closely, I realized they weren’t acting alone—at least six people were involved in the theft, taking advantage of the frequent stops in small towns to get off with stolen belongings. And the driver? He seemed to ignore the situation or, even worse, be complicit in the crime.

How to Avoid Being a Victim of Theft on Buses and in Terminals

  1. Keep your valuables with you: Do not store them in overhead compartments or the bus luggage hold. The safest option is to carry them in a fanny pack or chest backpack.
  2. Do not trust bus security: Some drivers might be accomplices or simply turn a blind eye to theft.
  3. Stay alert to suspicious behavior: If you notice people frequently boarding and disembarking or acting strangely, be cautious.
  4. Do not get distracted at terminals: Thieves often take advantage of moments when travelers are engrossed in their phones to snatch bags and suitcases.
  5. Research before traveling: Choose bus companies with good reviews and strict security measures.

These types of experiences can be frightening, but by taking proper precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft. Travel safely and enjoy the magic of the Andean highlands without any setbacks.
